Filmmaking in nontraditional media.

One-day symposium organized by Piet Zwart Institute & Creating 010, Hogeschool Rotterdam in collaboration with Signals: For Real, International Film Festival Rotterdam

While the traditional media for moving images – movie theaters and TV - are losing their dominant role, filmmaking and the language of cinema migrate to other media that often aren’t screens.
This symposium gathers filmmakers, artists, designers and activists who reframe cinema as interventions into public space through visual, sound and mobile media, as tactical transmedia narratives, and as filmmaking rooted in the avant-garde expanded cinema tradition.
What does the language of cinema contribute to these other media, and which opportunities do these media conversely offer for the future practice of filmmaking?

Je suis aujourd’hui à Prague, en compagnie de notre partenaire Dédale, pour présenter notre workshop “Urban PlayGround” lors de la conférence MOB à Prague, organisée par Ciant.

Events on art, the city and mobility are organized by the partners of the project. They present the film carried out during the residences, the creations of the workshop, as well as films of the prizes winner of the local contests of realization of film on portable telephone. These events fall under the programming of the partners and can take the form of exhibitions, projections in urban space, multidisciplinary evenings on the topic of mobility…

Dans la foulée des dernières interventions / présentations / conférences, voici une table ronde organisée par le festival “Image de Ville” à laquelle je suis invité le 14 novembre à Aix-En-Provence.

Marches urbaines, nouvelles technologies, interventions artistiques sur le handicap… de nombreuses expériences cherchent à développer de nouvelles approches de la rue.

avec Nicolas Memain, montreur d’ours en béton (Marseille), Ulrich Fischer, producteur (Genève), Ferran Orobitg, metteur en rue (Barcelone)

Et en présence d’Elus en charge des politiques d’Espace Urbain de six villes jumelles et partenaires de la Ville d’Aix-en-Provence, dans le cadre du projet européen EXPERT (Pérouse – Italie ; Tübingen – Allemagne ; Bath – Royaume Uni ; Coimbra – Portugal ; Grenade – Espagne ; Pécs – Hongrie)

Cette présence dans le sud de la France sera suivie de quelques rendez-vous de travail à Marseille.

How those two antagonist streams do affect a project like Walking the Edit and our young Company Memoways ? It’s simple: we have to prove that the new ideas are not only theory, but 1) work and 2) bring money in. All that with very little money to begin with.

Our system has proven that it’s working (see Walking the Edit movies or the Smartmap), even with only 20% of the functionalities that we would like to implement.
We have done a lot until now, but it seems that it’s not enough (for many reasons, too long to explicit here). So we have to react to be able to stay on that boat, by bringing our specific, innovative and surprizing ways to “pull” and “push” the memory of this journey…
But to react, we need some more “fuel”: without money it will be very difficult to continue.
So now we have to prove that there can be a viable economic development for this new kind of open and playful interactions with the digital world; as there is no comparable project that has build up a working economic model, we have to project that the value of the individual and singular user experience is the creation of a potential economic value. It is not given, but as many other people try to develop strategies to engage user with a given (story)world, it seems that there is a global movement towards more experience creation on the road to the value creation.

Memoways - as a tool to “play” with our shared audiovisual memory through a personal way of interacting with the digital world – is in short two things: a new conceptual architecture of bridging existing technologies together and the vision of taking this digital world not only as a way to master our real world, but to extend our human needs (food for the body and the soul) to the digital world. And our human needs are not only to be able to go from point A to B as fast as possible or to find the most powerful way to get access to the bank account of a user – we as human being need to be entertained, intellectually and emotionally challenged; in short: to be able to use the available tools (may they be digital or not) to build working and sharable links between our dreams, wishes and desires and our daily reality.

All that being said – what road will we be able to build and what path can we share ?

Those are the technical and strategic waypoints – about the more conceptual and artistic branches, we will still continue to work through possible research projects.

Je participe les 25 et 26 octobre à un séminaire intitulé “Vidéo & Ambiance – Approches vidéographiques dans la recherche urbaine à travers le rythme” à Grenoble, à l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble.

Le séminaire Vidéo & Ambiance interroge l’utilisation de la vidéo dans le cadre de la recherche sur les ambiances, et plus généralement dans la recherche urbain. L’évolution des pratiques vidéographiques dans la recherche urbaine nous amène aujourd’hui à reconsidérer le rôle de la vidéo. La vidéo ne semble plus pouvoir être réduite à l’état d’outil ou d’illustration mais pourrait recouvrir une fonction d’une autre nature. Ainsi, le rapport entre vidéo et recherche ne se résume plus uniquement à l’utilisation de l’une pour l’autre, mais se développe comme une imbrication de l’une dans l’autre.

Ces deux jours vont permettre de croiser les approches, et de recroiser les chemins de “complices” de plus ou moins longue date, comme Pascal Amphoux.

Voici un des “livrables” du workshop Urban Playground: une mindmap bien touffue, qui en cache d’autres (cliquez sur les branches avec texte rouge et vous passerez sur une autre carte).

Cette mindmap permet de visualiser en vue d’ensemble les concepts et enjeux qui se trouvent sur notre chemin.

Notre chemin: faire des allers retours entre le territoire physique et le territoire numérique, en passant par le territoire hybride…
Une fois que l’on sait par où passer et quel est notre terrain de jeu, on peut commencer à jouer (avec les concepts, les idées, les questions et les amorces de réponses).

Le but est de pouvoir s’aider de cette mise à plat de enjeux et questions pour imaginer, financer et proposer des:
- services innovants (médiation, utilitaires, …)
- projets culturels (artistique, patrimoniaux, historiques, …)
- applications spécifiques (pour personnes à mobilité réduite, AR, …)
- jeux (en réseau, géolocalisés etc)
- …
